Fishackathon
2022
Protecting the world’s aquatic environments is now more urgent than ever.
Our oceans, rivers and lakes are critical to our survival and prosperity. Our consumption of seafood has doubled in the last 50 years, mostly from the farming of aquatic animals and plants, and one in ten people in the world derive income directly or indirectly from the fishing, farming and seafood industries.
Yet human activity has significantly impacted the health of our blue planet. Overfishing, physical and chemical pollutants, slave labour, wastes, and the effects of climate change threaten not only aquatic life but also our own lives and livelihoods.
Although awareness of the challenges our oceans, rivers and lakes are facing has grown, there is still the need for wider action, cooperation, and innovation to restore our aquatic environments and ensure they, and the seafood industry, are managed and operated in a sustainable and responsible manner for future generations.
The Fishackathon is a global programme that engages communities of passionate innovators and inspires mass collaboration to address aquatic related challenges with sustainable, tech-enabled solutions.
Challenge Statements
Overview
Seafood forms 17% of global animal protein intake and is the world’s most traded food commodity, with an annual retail value estimated at USD 900 billion.
Three billion people rely on wild caught or farmed seafood as their primary source of protein and one in ten people in the world derive income from the seafood industry. Therefore, the environmental and socio-economic sustainability of the industry is vital.
Challenge
Unfortunately, the world’s aquatic resources and the seafood industry face significant challenges due to human activity and the lack of sufficient sustainable management practices. For example, 33% of global seafood stocks are fished at unsustainable levels and over 30% of seafood is considered Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU).
The Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that 45% of countries do not have proper fisheries management measures in place.
Although aquaculture - growing at 7.5% per year since 1970 - has helped to mitigate the decline in wild caught fisheries, it comes with its own set of challenges, such as excessive use of environmental destruction and pollution, excessive use of antibiotics, disease leading to elevated mortality rates, and social and environmental displacement.
What We Need To Do
Our mission is to raise awareness about these and other challenges and drive collaboration between organisations, governments, entrepreneurs, and innovators like you. Ultimately, we aim to discover innovative, sustainable solutions that can help us restore aquatic ecosystems and ensure that they are used and managed responsibly.
Fishackathon 2022 focused on the following themes and challenge statements:
Wild Fisheries
Small-scale Fisheries
Preventing, Deterring & Eliminating IUU Fishing
Aquaculture
Aquaculture Health Management
Aquaculture Nutrition
Waste Output Management
Supply Chain & Markets
Market Data
Traceability
Quality & Preservation Traceability
Social & Environmental Sustainability

The Fishackathon aims to bring together designers, developers, subject matter experts, and organisations to create impactful, actionable, and scalable solutions to key challenges facing our aquatic environments, and the people and the industries that rely upon them.
Fishackathon is one of the largest environmental hackathons in the world, taking place in over 30 countries and 40 cities in 2018.
Prizes
2. Cash Prize of US$5000 for the best use case utilizing the Algorand Foundation framework.
US$2000 for the best use case developed and deployed on Blockchain-based Service Network
3.BSN is also offering up to 400 accounts on BSN public chain services and 100 accounts on BSN permission services for two months.
4. Hatch, the world's first aquaculture accelerator, will be offering one fast track place in the Hatch Innovation Studio Singapore 2022 for the winning team of the aquaculture challenge.

7. Laava Essentials Packages with up to 10,000 Laava Smart Fingerprints each for use in supply chain trials with participant's clients for each one of the category winners.
Objectives
The objectives of the Fishackathon
are threefold:
1
To raise awareness about the challenges facing our aquatic environments, the fisheries and aquaculture industries, and the people that rely on them
2
To discover impactful and actionable solutions for sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and seafood industries, along with the restoration and protection of our aquatic environments; and
3
To partner with leading companies, governments, and organisations to pilot and scale solutions.
In doing so, the Fishackathon seeks to address the following Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Global Compact’s 5 Tippings Points for a Healthy and Productive Ocean by 2030 :
Five Tipping Points
